Ronaldinho: “To set out again of the zero”

Ronaldinho: “To set out again of the zero” strategist of the FC Barcelona Ronaldinho is persuaded that Blaugrana will have all to rebuild in order to rebound as of the next season after one year disappointing for the Catalans.
The Brazilian ace hopes to set out again on new bases, to start by finding an impeccable physical condition thanks to his non-participation in Copa America which finally enables him to blow between two championships. “We must set out again of zero if we want to have a team which will gain the title the next year. We made all of the errors on certain points during the season. We could better have made on each aspect. I left the World cup and I immediately connected what obstructed me this year. I crossed it whereas I did not feel with the signal, that really exhausted me. I never was to 100%. No player was criticized as much than me. When one gains, everyone addresses compliments and when that does not go any more, one seeks the reasons of them. Sometimes, one finds even reasons which do not even exist.” it declared.
The president of Barça Joan Laporta already announced the bringing into force of a new code of conduct in order to make assume enccore more their responsibilities with the players. “It has the right to see the things with its manner but the players did not change anything. From now on, we simply wait to see which decisions will be made. I already worked avecdifférents trainers and presidents and each one had his manner of making and that to me forever posed problem.” the old Parisian one specified which with the reputation to be relatively undisciplined.
After weeks of intensive speculations on its future and the very marked interest of Milan AC, Ronaldinho reiterated its engagement with the Catalan club which comes from enregister the signature of Thierry Henry: “I am happy here. I do not think any more that at my holidays and then, I will return to play in Barcelona.” it concluded.

Henry, star among the stars

The arrival of Thierry Henry in Barcelona causes the unanimity. The French player is moved to find itself in a club which joins together some of the best players of the world. Players who, with Messi with Eto' O while passing by Ronaldinho, are also pleased to find at their sides an attacker of this quality, without fearing less world the competition which will result from this. Because, to believe of it Frank Rijkaard, the trainer inhabitant of Barcelona, competition there will be. The Netherlander ensures indeed that it does not intend to give up its famous 4-3-3, in spite of the arrival of Thierry Henry who modifies his offensive arguments notably. If, as all seems to indicate it, Yaya Touré, arrived new recruit of Monaco, becomes the appointed defensive medium, it will have to be shouldered by two mediums able to contribute to recovery as with the construction of the play, profile which corresponds to players like Iniesta, Deco, Xavi or Motta.
Blow, the four large attackers will have only three stations to be divided. Who of Messi, Ronaldinho, Eto' O or Henry will make bench? For Rijkaard, the question will hardly arise, because with a program as charged as that with Barça, four players for three stations is not a luxury, since it will be necessary to turn regularly to let blow all and sundry. Without speaking about the wounds which, last season, had struck two of these stars, Eto' O and Messi. Remain that, for the great appointments, the choice will be inevitably painful…
Blow, the idea of an evolution of the tactical system of Rijkaard has also its followers, a kind of 4-2-3-1 making it possible to align the poker of offensive ace together blaugrana. In this case, recovery would return to a double pivot where Yaya Touré would be associated Deco or Iniesta for example, with Messi, Henry and Ronaldinho being able to evolve/move behind Eto' O at a peak. A tempting formula and very offensive.
Another possibility, to start again the idea of a departure of Samuel Eto' O. The Cameronian attracts many covetousnesses indeed. And its public attacks against Rijkaard and Ronaldinho, last February, had contributed to waste environment within the team and in particular at the end of catastrophic season of Blaugrana. As many reasons which plead for a departure. However, Eto' O ensures that he wants to remain and he promised with his president Joan Laporta to in the future avoid all new skid. Blow, Laporta affirmed that Eto' O would remain the next season. A promise which could however be contradicted for little that an offer can allure at the same time the club and the player. Samuel Eto' O does not hide that, if it were to leave, its preferred destination would be London, where a certain Arsene Wenger would undoubtedly be charmed to accomodate it. Releasing from the blow the pressure on the choice of the line of attack inhabitant of Barcelona…

Brazil's Ronaldinho looking for one more title in Japan

TOKYO: Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho will be the main attraction when European champion Barcelona takes on its fellow continental title holders at the Club World Cup.
The Dec. 10-17 tournament features the top club teams from soccer's six confederations.
"I'd love to win the Club World Cup," Ronaldinho told the FIFA.com Web site. "This year, I wanted to win the (Spanish) league, the Champions League, the World Cup (in Germany), and the Club World Cup. Unfortunately it proved beyond us in Germany, but that makes me even more determined not to miss out in this tournament."
European champion Barcelona will be joined by South American champion Internacional of Brazil, Mexico's Club America representing North and Central America's CONCACAF, African champions Al Ahly of Egypt, Asian champion Chonbuk of South Korea and New Zealand's Auckland City FC, the Oceania champion.
Ronaldinho, winner of the last two FIFA player of the year awards, has had a stellar year for Barcelona, leading the Spanish side to the Champions League title. At the World Cup, Brazil was eliminated in the quarterfinals by France.
Ronaldinho said a finals showdown with his former Brazilian archrivals Internacional would be a difficult encounter.
"It would be a very tough game, but one we'd do our very best to win," said Ronaldinho. "I'm sure that their fans would whistle at me and put pressure on me."
Barcelona will be without the services of Argentine forward Lionel Messi, who injured his foot in a match against Spanish team Real Zaragoza last month and will be sidelined for up to three months.
Striker Samuel Eto'o is also injured and will not play here.
Auckland City opens the tournament on Dec. 10 against Al Ahly, while Barcelona plays its first in the semifinals on Dec. 14 against the winner of the first-round match between Chonbuk Motors and Club America.
Some 26 teams have won the Club World Cup, which began in 1960 as the Intercontinental Cup. The tournament was known as the Toyota Cup from 1980 to 2004 when it featured the top club teams from South America and Europe before it became the expanded Club World Cup in 2005.
Last year, South American champion Sao Paulo took the title after defeating European heavyweight Liverpool 1-0 at International Stadium Yokohama.
South Korean side Chonbuk Motors advanced to the tournament with a 3-2 aggregate win over Al Karama of Syria in the 2006 Asian Champions League.

Ronaldinho magic inspires Barca win
An irresistible first half of football from Barcelona crowned by strikes from Ronaldinho and Eidur Gudjohnson saw the champions move into the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen at Camp Nou.
Ronaldinho settled nerves inside the stadium with a perfectly thought out free-kick on 13 minutes, after he had been felled by Pierre Wome just outside the penalty area.
Sensing the Bremen wall would jump, the Brazilian stepped up and side-footed a shot under the wall and in at the far post.
Goalkeeper Tim Wiese was left incensed at his team-mates for allowing the ball to run under them, but credit must go to Ronaldinho for his anticipation and intelligence.
Five minutes later, and the Catalans were well and truly on their way. Ronaldinho turned inside from the left, and fired a delightful crossfield ball in behind the visitors' defence for the marauding Ludovic Giuly to latch onto. He took one touch, before laying it square for Gudjohnsen to blast home from close range.
By now, Barcelona were rampant, with Andres Iniesta and Deco in total control of affairs in midfield.
Indeed it was the latter who almost provided the spark for his team's third, collecting a clearance from Carles Puyol, before charging forward all of 60 yards and releasing Gudjohnsen.
The big Icelander showed remarkable agility and superb close control, skipping past three Bremen defenders, though saw his shot come back off a post to Giuly, who managed to shank the ball wide only eight yards out and with the entire goal at his mercy.
As the half wore on, Bremen managed to gain a foothold in the game, and had the travelling support out of their seats in anticipation when Wome fired in a teasing ball from the left, though it rolled agonisingly across the face of goal as Marco Almeida and Miroslav Klose were both unable to reach it.
After a scintillating first 45 minutes, the Catalans emerged rather subdued in the second half, and Bremen found their passing and rhythm.
Diego began to exert his influence on the game, and was a constant threat with his vision and movement.
He twice tested Victor Valdes in the opening ten minutes of the half, with the goalkeeper doing particularly well to hold onto the second effort after it took a late deflection off Almeida.
But Barcelona gave a reminder of their danger on the hour mark, as Ronaldinho released Gudjohnsen with another perfectly weighted ball in behind the defence. This time though, the former Chelsea man was guilty of hesitancy, as he allowed Naldo enough time to get back and charge down the shot.
The tempo of the game fell away a little as Barcelona sat further back to protect their lead, though failed to keep tabs on the lively Klose.
The German Player of the Year sprinted in behind the defence with 10 minutes to go, but none of his team-mates went with him, and his pull-back rolled into an empty penalty area before the Azulgrana scrambled it clear.
Bremen threw everything at their opponents as the clock wore down, though Rafael Marquez and Puyol stood firm for the champions, who will now go into the pot for the draw for the last 16.

‘Ronaldinho’s also human’

‘Ronaldinho’s also human’
Madrid: Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has defended playmaker Ronaldinho from criticism that he is not reproducing the kind of form that earned him the World Player of the Year title.
“It is okay to criticise the team because they have shown they can do better but it is too much to only talk about Ronaldinho,” Rijkaard told radio Catalunya. “He is a fundamental player for us but he isn’t a robot. Sometimes we forget he is human.”
The Brazilian international failed to live up to expectations at the World Cup finals in Germany and has struggled to inspire the European and Spanish champions in their relatively sluggish start to the season.
Cup Effect?
Barca are top of the Primera Liga but some laboured performances have raised questions about the form of the team and Ronaldinho in particular.
“What happened in the World Cup hasn’t affected him. He had the right attitude but his team mates just didn’t connect with him,” Rijkaard said. “But it is another thing to talk about the pre-season. Because of contractual obligations he had to play every game and this catches up with you in the end.
“We have seen a drop in his performances but we aren’t worried. We are managing it and he is doing what he can for the team which is the most important thing.”
Both Rijkaard and defender Rafael Marquez have pinpointed the club’s two-week promotional tour of Mexico and the US as a major disruption to Barca’s preparations for the season.
In a separate interview Ronaldinho, who has a history of slow starts, backed Rijkaard’s assessment of his state of form. “I start every season the same. I’m getting into it.”

Ronaldinho insists he's happy at Barcelona and confident of bouncing back to his best.
It's been suggested the Brazilian's poor form has been due to him carrying an injury, or being unsettled by rumours linking him with AC Milan.
But Ronaldinho says: "There's no offer from Milan. I feel as if I'm home in Barcelona; it's perfect here, I do not need talk about it. It cheers me knowing that people want me to stay.
"I am not a machine, nobody is. I am not worried. Why should I be? I feel happy and I am preparing myself to help. That is my objective. When the team needs me, I will be ready."

Bare earth where genius flourished
Bare earth where genius flourished
Owen Slot, chief sports reporter, and Marc Aspland, chief sports photographer, report from Porto Alegre in Brazil, the spiritual home of Barcelona's footballing superstar
On Tuesday last week, we found Pelézinho (“Little Pelé” — his older brother, like countless Brazilians, is known as Pelé) and Tinga (named after a local player), both from Escola Alberto Torres, Ronaldinho’s old school, practising so that they can be like him. The groundsman smiles a slightly toothless grin. He remembers watching Ronaldinho here. Only last weekend, he says, Ronaldinho’s uncle was playing in a match here. “Uncle Miquimba,” he explains, is 50 and still possesses a mesmerising “elastico”. He mimes a stepover. “If you could see him,” he says, “your jaws would drop.”
Miquimba is a legendary figure in these parts. Some call Ronaldinho the best in the world, others here have argued that he is not even the best in his family. Miquimba drank his way out of a professional career, but he is still fit to lead the family football team and being one of 13 siblings, there were plenty of recruits.
Most of the siblings still live here, around the Marques Do Marica, the street where Ronaldinho grew up. Vila Nova, the suburb, has been described inaccurately as a “favela”; it is certainly poor, the houses basic and the streets only recently covered in tarmac, but it is no slum. It was here that Ronaldinho’s grandfather formed the family football team that attained such notoriety that opposition teams would travel from out of town to play them. Ronaldinho turned out for them when he was young. Apparently, they are pretty good without him.
“You must tell the world that Vila Nova is beautiful,” his proud aunt, Conceição, says. “Tell them about the party, too.” This was nearly four years ago, the party that started as a chicken barbecue when Brazil won the World Cup but went all through the night and the next day. “All Vila Nova came here,” she says. “I’ve never seen so many chickens in my life.”
So mark the Marques Do Marica as the other birthplace of Ronaldinho’s amazing talent. “He was always playing here in the street,” Conceição says. “The only time he wasn’t playing football, he was playing samba.” The last time he was here, though, was on his return from that World Cup. “The crowd was so vast that he couldn’t leave,” she says. “He can’t come here any more.”
The only place left for him in his home town is his private palace, ten minutes away, which comes with its own football pitch, a hall that can hold a party for 300 and blanket security. “When he is in Porto Alegre, I go to see him at his home,” Conceição says. What she really wants is to see him in Europe. “I’ve never been out of Brazil,” she says. “It is my dream to see him play for Barcelona, or in the World Cup. I have my passport ready. I’m ready to go.”
But to suggest that he has left bitterness or animosity in his wake could not be more wrong. A voyage through this young man’s life story reveals a pride and affection for him of incredible warmth.
The barest facts are rooted in tragedy. His father, João de Assis Moreira, worked in the shipyards and also as an attendant at Grêmio, one of the city’s two big clubs. The family lived in Vila Nova until his older brother, Roberto de Assis (known here as Assis), started to attract attention as a professional player. It was when Torino started making overtures to Assis that Grêmio bought the family a smarter house with a swimming pool as a sweetener to stay. When Ronaldinho was 8, however, his father had a heart attack in the pool and died.
It cannot have helped that, as a result, his mother then had to go out to work, selling cosmetics, although it was not long before the young boy was taken under the wing of one of his first coaches, Cleon Espinoza. “Myself and the other fathers in the team used to take him to the beach, to barbecues, to our houses,” Espinoza said. “We tried to look after him. I thought that the best way to stop Ronaldinho thinking about his father was by having him play football.”
Espinoza would not stake any claim to a paternal role. That was played by Assis, who is admired by many for his contribution to his brother’s upbringing. His own career was ruined by injury, but to this day, Assis remains Ronaldinho’s agent, adviser and closest friend.
When asked about his father, Ronaldinho says that he is motivated to fulfil the unwavering faith the old man had in him. There is something of the late Earl Woods — father of Tiger, the world’s No 1 golfer — in the predictions left by João. When Assis was establishing himself as Grêmio’s star player, João would claim with certainty that his younger son would be better still.
On the touchline of the Grêmio academy, which Ronaldinho joined when he was seven, other fathers would warm to João — after all, he was the father of the great Assis — but they were consumed by jealousy for Ronaldinho. “Comparing their sons to Ronaldinho would drive them mad,” José Alzir Flores, his first academy coach, says.
“Some of them paid the newspapers to write that their boys were better than Ronaldinho.”
But the boys themselves loved their team-mate. Indeed, despite the loss of his father, his exuberance appears to be his hallmark. Behind Grêmio’s Stadio Olympico is the training field, at one end of which is a bar run for 30 years by Elizabeth Pires, known to all as Aunt Bete.
Even before he could see over the counter, Ronaldinho would help Aunt Bete in the bar, and he would help himself to the odd peach juice, too, but the mere mention of his name has her face lighten and eyes moisten.
“My son, my son!” she says. “I love him. Even when he was famous, he would help me in the same way.” And she recalls adoringly how, when Ronaldinho scored at her end of the training ground, he would shout out to her: “Aunt Bete! I scored a beautiful goal. That must be worth a Coke!”
Similarly dewy-eyed is Pedrao — Big Pete — the Grêmio security chief. “Ronaldinho always used to play with the ballboys after training,” he says, “even when it was raining. At Christmas he used to give everyone hampers. The other players sometimes gave presents but he never forgot. And once, when I was building my house, I told him in passing that I needed to pay the builders. The next day, he turned up in person and paid for all the building materials himself. To this day, I still don’t know how much I owe him.”
But the key to the man, of course, is his football and there are fascinating lessons here of how it was honed. “When he joined us,” Flores explains, “he was very thin but his technique was so good that he played in an age group above himself. “He was so weak physically, though, that he would always be pushed off the ball, so we coaches always told him not to keep it because he’d be tackled. Before receiving the ball, then, he’d always look to see where the defenders were and where his next pass was going to. I am convinced that this is where his extraordinary perception and awareness comes from. It is partly innate, but when I see him now playing for Barcelona, putting the ball into spaces that no one else has seen, I recognise it from when he was at the academy here.
“And I am convinced that this is also why he is so rarely injured. He still passes the ball before the tackle arrives. He has spent his entire football life escaping the hits.”
Flores has been at the academy 18 years and never seen another youngster so talented. There was one who came close, he says, but who never made it. Espinoza says he has had one other player who did share a similar talent and who was actually a better athlete, but he is now playing for Pelotas in the Brazilian second division. Ask why it was Ronaldinho who made it and they give the same answer: the family unit, the guidance of Assis.
Which may augur well for the future. The Moreira family team plays on and a new generation is now stepping up. Way down the pecking order comes Aunt Conceição’s grandson, Taylor, who is just two, but can balance a ball on the back of his neck. Most notable is Diego, son of Assis, who is 10 years old and, at the Grêmio academy, they say that he is special, better than Assis, not as good Ronaldinho, perhaps, but blessed with his same sunny disposition.
And, to Aunt Bete’s delight, he has already started serving in the bar.

Eto`o out for up to three months with knee injury
![]() | |
| Eto`o was last season`s Spanish league top scorer with 26 goals. (Empics) |
MADRID, Spain -- FC Barcelona striker Samuel Eto`o is expected to be out of action for up to three months after tearing and displacing the meniscus of his right knee.
Eto`o was carried off on a stretcher after attempting a pass to Ronaldinho in the 65th minute of Barcelona`s 1-1 draw Wednesday at Werder Bremen in the Champions League.
The Cameroon striker was to undergo tests later Thursday to determine the full extent of his injury.
"This type of injury occurs with a sudden change in the direction of the knee," Barcelona doctor Ricard Pruna was quoted as saying on the club`s Web site Thursday.
Eto`o, voted third in last year`s FIFA world player of the year award, was making his 101st appearance for Barcelona.
The 25-year-old, Africa`s top player of the last three seasons, has scored 68 goals for the club, including 26 last season which made him the Spanish league`s top scorer. He heads this season`s chart with four.
The defending European and Spanish champion is second behind Chelsea in Champions League Group A. It lies top in the Spanish league with 10 points from four games.

Ronaldinho helps charity for Carlisle soccer hero
By Jon Colman
WORLD Footballer of the Year Ronaldinho has stepped in to help a charity night for Carlisle-born soccer hero Kevin Beattie.
Barcelona’s Brazilian superstar made a personal call to organisers of the November event to say he would be donating a pennant, signed by all his team-mates at the European champions.
The pennant will be up for auction, along with a football signed by Chelsea’s championship winners at the charity night, which is raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Former Ipswich and England star Beattie’s wife, Margaret, suffers from MS.
Organiser Malcolm Thompson, the president of a newly-formed Ipswich supporters’ club in Haverhill, said: “To get a call from the greatest player in the world saying that he and his team mates would like to help shows what status Kevin held in the game.”
The event, on November 1, is being held in Haverhill, near Ipswich – but Cumbrians can still join the auction by e-mail. Bids should be sent to itfc@fsmail.net, along with name, address and phone number.
If you wish to make any donations towards the MS Society, email the same address for more details.
Signed donations from Gary Lineker, Ipswich Town and comedian Frank Skinner will also be up for grabs.
Beattie, who won nine England caps, was voted Ipswich’s greatest ever player.

Mertesacker waiting for Ronaldinho

Football Champions League
Germany’s Per Mertesacker became one of the stars of the World Cup with a series of impressive displays in the centre of defence alongside Christoph Metzelder. Since then, he has moved from Hannover to Werder Bremen, though not everything has gone to plan.
The 1.96 metre defender has so far been prevented from making his debut through injury, though could appear on Wednesday against European Champions Barcelona. Here, he talks to Eurosport in an exclusive interview.
Will you be ready to start in the match against Barcelona?
Per Mertesacker: I don't know yet whether I'll play. That decision is out of my hands. I feel good and things are getting better. But I'm certainly still some way from where I want to be in terms of fitness. I need match practice to get there.
You could get that practice against Ronaldinho…
PM: Yes, that sounds good. This is why I came to Werder, to experience these type of games. But we will have to see when I am ready to make my debut. In any case, we hope that we're still in with a chance later in the group phase [of the Champions League] and we have to give everything in every game. After the first defeat, it's all about hanging on in there, so that we give ourselves the opportunity of progressing. Barcelona has caused a sensation over the last few years. It won't be easy, but we have to believe in ourselves and be courageous.
Does this mindset help you in this current situation, where you are still waiting to make your Bundesliga debut for Werder?
PM: It doesn't bother me too much, and I don't put myself under any unnecessary pressure. I think I am able to see where the times are when you should start asking yourself questions, and when you should take things easier.
How are you dealing with the idea that you are, in a sense, the new saviour? Everybody is expecting that you bring instant stability to a porous defence.
PM: It has been over exaggerated. Of course I want to perform well, but first of all I need to settle in and recover fully from my injury, so that I can be 100% fit for my first few games. I want to give my best for the club, as they paid out a lot of money for me. I want to pay that back, that's my ambition, but I'm certainly no saviour. I can deal with the pressure, I learnt that during the World Cup.
Has the transfer from Hannover 96 to Bremen been a huge change for you?
PM: The standard here is a lot higher than in Hannover, I have to adapt to that. But I can learn a lot from many of the players here. There are players here who enjoyed a a lot of success in their careers. That will certainly help me, and there's no doubt I can develop my game here. And it's not just my team-mates in the Germany squad who support me in doing so.
Was your departure from Hannover still difficult?
PM: My heart is still in [Hannover] 96. Part of me belongs to the club and it was painful to leave the club. It still hurts a little bit. But I simply had new goals and ambitions. And now I'm here to give everything for Werder.
Have you always dreamed of a career as a professional footballer?
PM: When I was younger I never gave any great thought to what I wanted to become. I definitely wanted to do my Abitur [equivalent of A-Levels] though. Football was only something that came into the reckoning quite late, when I was 17 or 18. Only then did I notice that I could make it. At 13 and 14, I wasn't good enough. I had the reputation for being too slow and immobile. But I developed my game at exactly the right time. In retrospect, that was crucial for me.
When you made your debut in the Bundesliga in 2003, you were brought off at half-time. Did you then have any doubts about your choice of profession?
PM: In that game, I was played at right back, so not in my preferred position. I was told a few times that not many people can come back after a game like that. But after half a year I got my second opportunity, and since then everything has worked out. I look upon that game as an experience, and I dealt with it well. I didn't beat myself up about it

Ronaldinho says more to come at Barca

RONALDINHO WARNS RIVALS
Ronaldinho - warning for Barcelona rivals.
RONALDINHO WARNS RIVALSBarcelona superstar Ronaldinho sounded an ominous warning to the rest of the primera Liga by insisting: "We can still get better."
Frank Rijkaard's side have started the domestic campaign with three wins out of three, scoring nine goals in the process, and thumped Levski Sofia 5-0 in their Champions League opener for good measure.
However, Brazil playmaker Ronaldinho is not getting too carried away just yet.
"This season has started well but we can still get better," he told club website www.fcbarcelona.com.
"There are many teams out there that can create many problems for us in the fight for the title - Sevilla, Valencia and Real Madrid among others."
It is Quique Sanchez Flores' Valencia side who on Sunday travel to the Nou Camp, where they have picked up points in each of the past five seasons.
Ronaldinho is keen to buck that trend.
"We are highly motivated towards getting all three vitally important points," said the 26-year-old.
"We must pay close attention to all their players for there to be no surprises.
"Valencia are an extremely difficult team to beat and they have immense quality in attack."
Ronaldinho insists he has not been distracted by talk of a possible new deal in Catalonia.
"I'm never worried about my contract," he said. "I only worry about playing.
"My brother deals with all the paperwork, the only time I worry is when I'm on the pitch.
"I am very happy with the way things are going at the moment. Since I have come to Barca, things have gone well for me. I hope things continue like this all season and for a long time to come."
The former Paris St German star is even happy to live with Rijkaard's famed rotation policy.
"No player likes to sit out of a game, (but) the boss makes his decisions and we respect them," he said.
"I do not consider myself untouchable."
Argentinian youngster Lionel Messi picked up a thigh problem during last weekend's victory over Racing Santander but resumed full training on Thursday and is in contention.
Santiago Ezquerro has been working in isolation after injuring his left quadriceps, and is unlikely to feature.
Valencia, along with Barca and Sevilla, are the only other Primera Liga team to have a 100% record after three games.
Spain striker David Villa is hopeful that record will be extended on Sunday, although the 24-year-old knows it will be far from easy.
"We are very optimistic about the match," Villa told club website www.valenciacf.es. "We know it will be a very difficult encounter against fantastic opposition.
"Their results speak for themselves - champions of Europe, champions of Spain... they are one of the strongest teams in the world.
"Like our team, theirs is full of quality players. If one does not perform then another will. We will have to be alert until the final whistle."
Villa will come face to face with international colleague Xavi on Sunday, and is relishing the task.
"(Xavi is) a great footballer, very important for the way Barcelona play.
"I have had the pleasure of playing in the same side as him and understand very well the way he plays."

AC Milan strengthen ties with Ronaldinho's brother
tribalfooball.com - September 22, 2006
![]()
AC Milan directors are strengthening their relationship with Roberto de Assis, the agent and brother of Barcelona star Ronaldinho.
Assis is again in Milan this week to meet with club directors, having negotiated Ricardo Oliveira's arrival from Real Betis last month.
Gazzetta dello Sport says, however, Assis isn't in Milan on business for Oliveira - nor Ronaldinho.
But the strengthening of ties between the agent and Milan has led to speculation of an end-of-season move to the San Siro for Ronaldinho, particularly if Lionel Messi shows he can emerge from his teammate's shadow in the coming months.
For all the talk of a bumper new contract for Ronaldinho, Barca sports chief Txiki Begiristain insisted this week that nothing had been discussed.

Ronaldinho and Real looking for health checks
By Phil Minshull
Madrid - Barcelona and Real Madrid, the Spanish league champions and runners up last season, will be hoping to bounce back after their less-than-convincing starts to the season two weeks ago.
Barca won 3-2 at Celta Vigo but their winner only came two minutes from time and they will be looking to be firing on all cylinders against visitors Osasuna on Saturday.
However, it has hardly been a week of ideal preparations for Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard, who lost 10 of his players to international duty.
| I just hope Ronaldinho returns healthy |
"I just hope Ronaldinho returns healthy," said Rijkaard through gritted teeth earlier this week.
The Dutch coach has been critical over the demands made on his star player by the Brazilian football authorities.
Osasuna were last season's surprise side in Spain and finished the season in fourth place but crashed 3-0 in the Nou Camp in the corresponding fixture 11 months ago.
This time around, they are determined not to leave Barcelona empty-handed.
| 'I am sure we are going to win titles this season' |
"I'm motivated to do well in this game because of the traditional rivalry (with Barca) that there was when I was at Real Madrid. I would feel the same regardless of who I was playing with if I was to face this team," said Osasuna's on-loan striker Roberto Soldado.
The highly-rated Soldado was the second most prolific scorer in the Spanish second division last season, playing for Real's reserve team, and also scored on several important occasions for the big boys.
For their part, Soldado's former club ground out a 0-0 score bore at the Santiago Bernabeu to Villarreal in their opening match and are out to get their first goal of the season against newly-promoted Levante on Sunday.
"Against Villarreal, we played against a team that knew each other well and we have new players that are still getting to know each other but I am sure we are going to win titles this season," commented Real's new coach Fabio Capello on Thursday.
Capello is optimistic that Ronaldo, who had an indifferent World Cup and who has been injured this summer, can still make the difference after three trophy-less years for Real.
"Very shortly we'll have Ronaldo back and I'm sure he's going to score 25 goals this season. What I've seen of Van Nistelrooy is also phenomenal. he's adapted very quickly to Spain," added Capello, commenting on his two main forwards.
Real's deadline day signing Jose Antonio Reyes, acquired on-loan from Arsenal, trained for the first time with his new team mates on Thursday and his appetite to make an immediate impact was obvious to everyone.
"I'm going crazy waiting to pull on the Real jersey," said the Spanish international striker on Thursday, his hunger whetted by being left on the bench for the entirety of Spain's two internationals during the last week.
Sevilla are the league leaders after the first week on the basis of their 4-0 thrashing of Levante.
Last season's Uefa Cup winners, who many pundits predict could make a serious challenge for their first league title since they won their one and only previous championship in 1946, defend their pole position at Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Ronaldinho Watch: Chelsea and AC Milan on "red alert"
Barcelona have been rocked by a sensational row between boss Frank Rijkaard and Ronaldinho. Chelsea and AC Milan have been put on red alert that Ronaldinho could demand showdown talks about his future.
The World Player of the Year did not travel to Celta Vigo after angering Rijkaard by missing training on Saturday.
Today's Sun suggests that Frank Rijkaard axed Ronaldinho from the squad that traveled to the Balaidos after the 26-year-old failed to report for training on Saturday. If the claim is accurate, Ronaldinho has fallen foul of a club rule whereby any player who does not train 48 hours before a match is dropped, a basic tenet of the Rijkaard regime.
Sports911.com is awaiting a response from Steve Freeth, Spokesperson for bet365, to determine if odds will be placed on Ronaldinho in the coming days. Ronaldinho remains one of the most searched for sports personalities today. His future is of special interest to punters.
Meanwhile, bet365 has released odds on the Euro 2008 Qualification – Top England Goalscorer with Wayne Rooney leading the pack at 13/8 odds.
Freeth disclosed Tuesday that bet365 have cut Andy Johnson from 20/1 to 12/1 to be top England scorer in qualifying after support for the Everton hitman.
“AJ couldn’t hit a barn door during pre-season, but he’s banging them in where it counts and already he looks a bargain at £8m.
“England have had their injury problems up front, and with the added handicap of losing Wayne Rooney for two games, AJ could get a chance to shine at international level – as long as McClaren doesn’t play him on the wing!”
Euro 2008 Qualification – Top England Goalscorer
Wayne Rooney 13/8
Peter Crouch 11/2
Frank Lampard 13/2
Steven Gerrard 13/2
Jermain Defoe 7
Michael Owen 10
Andy Johnson 12
Darren Bent 14
Joe Cole 16
Dean Ashton 25
John Terry 50
David Beckham 66
Theo Walcott 100

Ronaldinho: Meet blues now? Sure
BETTER now than later.
That's what Barcelona star Ronaldinho said after the Champions League draw put his side and Chelsea in the same group.
This is the third successive season they will be meeting. On the previous two occasions, the meetings were in the last 16, and turned into hostile affairs, with no love lost.
This renewed rivalry will again capture the imagination.
Said World Player of the Year Ronaldinho: 'Chelsea have always been very difficult opponents in past seasons.
'Both teams have world-class players, and with the way we know each other, we are going to have to put a lot into the two games.
'But I think it's better we meet Chelsea now, as they're such a strong team, rather than having to cope with them later.
'At least, we can both go through. It gives you impetus, but we cannot discount Werder Bremen because they are also a strong team.
'But Chelsea will be stronger still. They have signed high-quality players, so they will certainly be stronger than last season, and that will make things more difficult for us.' - PA Sport.

Brazil ace's keepy-uppy

By ANTONELLA LAZZERI
RAGGED Ronaldinho turned into a World Cup flop because he spent his nights enjoying illicit romps with his French girlfriend, The Sun can reveal.Gorgeous model Alexandra Paressant said the Brazilian ace broke team rules to sneak off most evenings to bed her.
If that wasn’t tiring enough, she said he then liked to play World Cup football game FIFA 2006 on his PLAYSTATION.
Alexandra, 22, said: “The Brazilian coach had banned WAGS from the team’s hotel but we couldn’t bear to be apart.
“So nearly every night he would come to my hotel room and we would make love all night."
“Sometimes we didn’t even make it into the room, we would make love there and then in the corridor. We are mad for each other.
“He missed me too much and I don’t think it harmed him.”

World cup flop ... Ronaldinho
Ronaldinho is famed for his amazing keepy-uppy ball juggling — but is equally skilled OFF the pitch, said Alexandra. She added: “He cannot live without love, he is a very passionate person.
“He is as much a performer in the bedroom as he is on the football pitch."
“One night he made me scream with such pleasure the people on the hotel terrace below heard us because my window was open.”
Alexandra, who watched all Brazil’s games, added: “I know people say he didn’t play so well in the World Cup but I think he played well.
“I made him happy, and when he is happy he plays better football.”
Instead, she says, his habit of playing PlayStation after their romps may have knocked his form.
She said: “He likes to relax afterwards by playing his games. He was playing the FIFA 2006 football game during the World Cup.”
Alexandra also revealed she found it hard to know who to shout for when Brazil played France.
She said: “My heart was torn. I obviously wanted him to win but I am French so I also wanted them to win, it was hard for me.” Buck-toothed Ronaldinho, 26, met Alexandra at a hotel in Barcelona after his £21million move to Spain. She said: “I was with a modelling friend, we were working.
“I saw him but I didn’t approach him because I thought he had the image of a playboy and I don’t like that kind of man.
“But I left my room key on the table by mistake and he very sweetly brought it to me. We started talking and he is actually very shy. I found him cute and so different from what people think he is like.
“He is very cute, very polite. He treats me like a lady. He likes to take me for romantic meals and buy me little presents.”
“We spend all our time together when we can. We spend a lot of time making love, a lot of time in the bedroom. He is the best lover I have ever had. I love him. I love him!” They are planning to go on holiday in Brazil after she finishes her next assignment. Fashion model Alexandra added: “We have a lovely time there, we stay in a little tiny place.
“Sometimes he hires a helicopter so we can go to the capital to shop — he is very thoughtful.”

Brazil thrill ... Alex with Ron
Alexandra is due to come to Britain in September to star in an ITV programme about WAGS.
She said: “I met all the British WAGS and they were very nice. I am looking forward to seeing them again. I don’t think Victoria Beckham is taking part but I am hoping to star with her husband David in a film next year.
“I am filming ‘Asterix 3’ and either he or Zidane is supposed to be a guest star.
“I hope it is Beckham because I don’t like Zidane, he is arrogant.”
Alexandra’s revelations will be little comfort to England fans — still puzzled as to what made OUR BOYS fizzle out in Germany

Ronaldinho no factor in Brazil defeat

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- The Ronaldinho who left the World Cup on Saturday looked nothing like the two-time FIFA Player of the Year who attracted all the attention coming into the tournament.
The Brazilian playmaker failed to impress or to score, a streak that continued Saturday against France, which eliminated Brazil 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
Ronaldinho called the elimination one of the greatest disappointments of his career.
"The Olympics and [the World Cup] are competitions that are very important and every player would like to do well in them," he said. "It's very sad when we can't."
Ronaldinho played on Brazil's team that was eliminated by Cameroon in the 2000 Olympics.
He was a member of the squad that won Brazil's fifth title at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan. He played five matches and scored two goals, including a spectacular free kick against England in the quarterfinals.
He also led Brazil to titles in the 1999 Copa America and the 2000 pre-Olympic tournament, as well as in last year's Confederations Cup in Germany.
But this World Cup he was far from the star who led FC Barcelona to the Spanish league and Champions League titles this season.
Ronaldinho's last goal came May 6 with Barcelona. The midfielder was held scoreless in three warmup matches in which Brazil outscored its opponents -- Swiss club FC Lucerne, Fluminense's under-20 squad and New Zealand -- 25-1.
Though he has 29 goals in 70 caps, Ronaldinho says his main role with the national team "is to help the other players score goals."
He did that twice in Brazil's 4-1 win over Japan last week.
On Saturday, he made no impact.

Ronaldinho up for world award
Ronaldinho is the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year
Ronaldinho up for world award
Barcelona and Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho has been nominated for a prestigious world sport award.
The 26-year-old is on a shortlist of six for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year honour.
Ronaldinho's main rival for the award will be last year's winner Roger Federer.
The pair will be up against cyclist Lance Armstrong, Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso, Golf sensation Tiger Woods and Motor Cycling's Valentino Rossi.
"I am very happy. When I was told that I was selected among the nominees I felt very excited," said Ronaldinho.
"I already know the Laureus Awards because Ronaldo told me about them. He received an award after the last World Cup. It is a great honour to be present there."
Ronaldinho is only the third player to have been voted FIFA World Player of the Year more than once, following Ronaldo and France's Zinedine Zidane, who have both won the award three times
Swedish golfer Annika Sorenstam will be a strong contender for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award.
She will face competition from Kim Clijsters, Tirunesh Dibaba, Yelena Isinbayaeva, Carolina Kluft, Janica Kostelic and Paula Radcliffe for the accolade.
Nominated for the World Team of the Year are La Liga and Champions League winners Barcelona.
Also shortlisted are last year's Champions League winners Liverpool, the All Blacks rugby union team, the all-conquering Renault Formula 1 team, Croatia's Davis Cup team and NBA champions San Antonio Spurs.
Argentine international Lionel Messi is nominated in the best newcomer category along with Rafael Nadal, Andrew Murray, Paula Creamer, Danica Patrick and Ben Roethlisberger.
Ronaldinho: "I am very happy. When I was told that I was selected among the nominees I felt very excited."
The Laureus World Comeback of the Year nominees include Martina Hingis, Jonah Lomu and Colin Montgomerie.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Barcelona on May 22.
Laureus is a joint venture between DaimlerChrysler and Richemont, represented by the founding partner brands IWC and Mercedes-Benz.

Ronaldinho: 'I Am Not The Best In The World'

Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho is widely considered the best footballer in the world - and he has the awards and trophies to prove it. World Footballer of the Year in 2004 and 2005, a World Cup winner with Brazil in 2002 and hot favourite to repeat that success in the June 9 - July 9 finals in Germany later this year, the 26-year-old added a Champions League medal to his collection last week when he played in Barcelona's 2-1 Champions League final victory against Arsenal.
But in an exclusive interview with Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa, Ronaldinho said that he does not consider himself the best footballer in the world.
"I think I am a player playing very good football, so I am happy. But I am aware of the fact that I have room for improvement. But in every country there are lots of great players."
Asked to name three, the soft-spoken striker rattles off names. "I could name more than three: Henry, Zidane, Ronaldo, Adriano, Robinho, Kaka, Shevchenko, Inzaghi...there are lots in every team."
Ronaldinho, who was born Ronaldo de Assis Moreira in Porte Alegre and is commonly known as Ronaldinho Gaucho due to his being from the Rio Grande do Sul state of Brazil, was given the nickname Ronaldinho to distinguish between himself and his compatriot Ronaldo.
He was born into a poor family. His mother sold cosmetics door to door as the salary from Ronaldinho's late father, who was a shipyard worker was not enough to support the family.
Although a lot has changed since then and his family remains the most important thing in his life, he is now firmly focussed on the World Cup ahead.
He says he is hoping that the Selecao can repeat their triumph of four years ago, but he is quick to point out that his main aim is not to be the superstar of the World Cup.
